How to Get More out of Your Local Park

Posted on 6th June 2017

Parks are fundamental assets that are key for the growing up and learning of children in their early years. A large amount of people creates their fondest memories at the park, from children of a young age to families.

However, parks are seeing a drastic decline in families visit their local parks, and this is mainly due to the rise of indoor facilities. However, the local park can be a great way to spend an afternoon or weekend, and one of the best parts about it- it's FREE! So we have put together a post with tips on how to get the most out of your local park.

Benefits of the park

  • They are a safe place for children to play
  • They are one of the best places for discovery and play
  • Parks provide a sense of adventure for children, which can help to expand their imagination, increase their confidence and increase their accomplishment levels which go hand in hand with increasing self esteem
  • The park can improve a child’s mood and fresh air helps too
  • Nature and outdoors are important for a child’s brain development
  • Increasing social skills and making new friends will increase their independence as well as gaining relationship building skills
  • All types of exercise will help children to become physically fit and healthy whilst increasing their motor skills and balancing skills

How to get the most out of your local park?

  • Take a bike ride. This will help with keeping physically active, getting fresh air, and increasing family relationships
  • Go for a picnic. Pick a nice spot in the park and take some healthy snacks, feed the ducks and then play on the play park. A great day out for the whole family!
  • Play sports such as bat and ball. This is a great way to exercise, and increase throwing and catching skills whilst having fun at the same time
  • Discovery day. Go for a walk in the park and search for new insects or name as many animals as you can. Pick an area and see what wildlife and plants there are in the area, which you could take home and investigate more!
  • Take different routes. Walks in the parks don’t always have to be the same, try going on different routes to keep things interesting
