How to Best Invest your Primary School Sport Funding

Posted on 22nd January 2019

With 33% of year 6 pupils being classed as overweight and obese, it is more important than ever to allow children the opportunity to get physically active, regardless of ability.

School Sport Funding is aimed to help schools improve their physical education provision. Although there are certain ways Schools are advised to spend it, they have the freedom of how they choose to spend this themselves.

When deciding how to spend your School Sport Funding, you should keep in mind PE and school sport can have an impact on young people’s physical, cognitive and social skills, both now and for in the future. It equips children with physical literacy, confidence and physical development.

It should be used to engage all pupils in regular physical activity, raising the profile of PE and sport across the whole school, and increase skills and knowledge of PE and sport staff, to aid them teaching a broader range of activities, and increase participation in competitive sport. Schools may also use this to fund external coaches, helping the school to drive sustainable improvements to their school sport.

You should also ensure that you can increase participation in the least-active young people within your school.

Here are a few visions to keep in mind when choosing how to spend your School Sport Funding:

  1. Give Sport Staff further training to help children develop their sport and PE skills
  2. Close the disability gap by increasing participation of pupils of all abilities
  3. Offer 2 hours of PE a week for pupils to work on physical and emotional development
  4. Help children get their 20 minutes a day of activity

When choosing, keep in mind the benefits of PE, school sport and physical activity. You can also consult with your staff and governors to get their opinion and evaluate outcomes. You should also access the current sport situation for your school, as well as how your sports funding plans will benefit pupils in the future years.

You can use your School Sport Funding to employ external coaches, such as us at Active Superstars. Our schools programme offers a wide range of sporting activities for children in nurseries, primary and secondary education, ensuring each individual is learning at a level which is challenging for them. We can increase participation levels in competitive sport and provide teacher training in PE, lesson plans and school sport.
